Invaluable resource for AS Film Studies FM2

I was recently told about this blog and it's quite, quite brilliant. It's well worth bookmarking and worth paying regular attention to; we'll certainly be doing so in lessons and in homework over the coming months.

Aspect Ratios - Why are different films different 'shapes' and 'sizes'?

After a question in class today, I thought this video might be of use to people wondering why it is that when we see films there are often 'borders' on the screen or why films often look like different shapes or sizes.

This video is really informative and covers lots of brilliant examples, and is well worth ten minutes or so of your time.

The making of Batman (1989)

A really interesting video has turned up online to coincide with the 25th Anniversary of Tim Burton's Batman film from 1989.

The video is a 'behind the scenes' style video that looks at various aspects of the film before it was made, showing investors why the idea of a dark and gritty Batman would be a successful one. It seems as though the film was made to show the people whose money was needed to make the film that they should continue to give the film money even though they weren't convinced the film would make money. There is also some really nice background to Batman comic books and the evolution of the character, so could be a really useful watch for both GCSE Film paper 1 and for FM2 section of AS Film.

Well worth 20 minutes of your time:

Film Restoration

Criterion are brilliant. They take classic films, masterpieces often, and make them even better by improving the quality of the original image and sound and package it up in original artwork, all handled with love and care.

But how does someone 'restore' a film ready for DVD or Blu-Ray release? What does it mean? What else is involved? What goes into deciding what image is used on a front cover of a DVD?

Find out below in this great video:

BFI UK Production figures 2013

One of the core functions of the BFI is to analyse and support production of domestic Film and to an increasing extent, TV.
Every year the BFI publishes a huge analysis of key facts and figures for the previous calendar year and the Statistical Yearbook, invaluable for AS Film and Media Studies, will be available later this year.
In the meantime, the've published some figures in terms of the number of productions in the UK for "High-End" (expensive) TV, Film and animation.

These stats are incredibly useful for AS and Media studies and well worth a read. I'd also highly recommend taking some notes on key figures.

When is a film British?

In light of the BAFTA Awards bizarrely giving the Best British Film award to Gravity, the BBC attempt to figure out that tricky issue of what makes a British Film. Well worth a read for AS Film especially.

Where do the highest grossing screenplays come from?

Before a film can be made someone needs an idea which then gets turned into a script. Scripts can be sold for millions of dollars sometimes, if producers feel that this script is guaranteed to make a great film. A really interesting blog post looks at where films that make lots of money at the Box Office get their ideas from.
A great resource and evidence for AS Film.

What's a Gaffer? What does a Best Boy do? A Key Grip?!

Have you ever seen the credits for a film and wondered what all the weird titles were for jobs that you had no idea existed? Of course you did, that's why you're visiting a school film blog in your own time.
Anyway, worry no longer as this handy guide from Empire Online will not only prove how complicated making a film is with all of the differing jobs, but also explain what the weird titles mean and what responsibility comes with those jobs.

This would be of particular use to AS Film in terms of the industry.

The Art of writing a script that makes money...

An interesting little video on the BBC website about how one company in America analyses the contents of scripts, views the themes in the film and then decides if the film will make money based on past trends to help inform people who invest in films whether it's worth making the scripts that are available to buy. It's a horrible way of looking at film, given that it's an art form, but there is clearly a set of reasons why some films perform better than others and some of these are explained in this short video, linked below:
